My Granny - The Original Girl Guide.

Hi everyone,
It's Emily again!

I've been thinking how WW2 is similar to this uncertain time. When I was in Year 6, we learnt about different aspects of WW2.
As part of my homework, I made an eggless cake as eggs were extremely rare back then. We have been going without a few household essentials recently, as they did in the war e.g flour and eggs and thought some of you might like to make this for your family - especially some of the older members who will remember such times as a child.

EGGLESS FRUIT CAKE

You will need:
455g Self raising flour
1/4 tsp Salt
115g Margarine
115g Caster sugar
3 Sweeteners in one desert spoon in hot water
400g sultanas and currants
1/4 pint of water
1/2 pint of milk
(I also added a teaspoon of cinnamon but this is optional)

Method:
1) Flour and salt into a bowl and rub in with the margarine, using your fingertips.
2) Add the fruit and sugar and mix well
3) Dissolve the sweeteners in the hot water
4) Add the milk and water
5) Beat well and put into a 8inch cake tin
6) Bake for 1 1/2 hrs at Gas Mark 3 until a skewer comes out clean.

Make do and mend doll

I asked my Granny for her memories of the war and this was her fondest one (apart from eating her weekly sweet ration all at once but then having to wait another week for more!) -
My Great Granny, Marjorie, made one of these for my Granny in 1943. (She was 2 years old at that time).
During the War, not many dolls were in the shops because most dolls were made in Germany, so none were being imported during that time.
These dolls were made up of  a pair or 2 odd socks (hers were black) Cotton wool or sold stockings were the only toy fillers available during the war and wool was used for the hair. Marjorie had used a lighter colour material for the eyes but Granny and I used modern googly ones. The doll's clothes were made from off cuts of material and her mouth was sewn with pink or red cotton thread.
If you are joining the Thursday night Ranger zoom meeting, she will be making an appearance!

  1. Excellent post Emily! I shall have to pass on this recipe to the Guides who have been challenged to do some Blitz cooking for their Guiding History Badge. Or you could make it and show us as part of the mid-week challenge? Can't wait to meet the doll on Thursday!
